The NIA Design Guide is a collection of online tools and calculators designed to assist the novice or knowledgeable user in the design, selection, specification, installation, and maintenance of mechanical insulation systems. The toolkit includes a simple energy, financial, condensation, and fire safety calculator, as well as design considerations for specific conditions such as: ambient design temperature, pipe size and material type, corrosion under insulation (CUI), freeze protection, abuse resistance, indoor air quality, maintainability, and service location.

The NIA Specification Guide
The design professional may use a variety of resources to help them create specifications. These include MasterSpec from the American Institute of Architects and the products sections of architectural journals. The NIA Specification Guide provides the design professional with an easy-to-use source of information on insulation materials and manufacturers. It includes specifications that are specific to mechanical insulation, and it can be used to develop insulation product specifications.
The NIA Specification Guide was originally created to support the training courses offered by NIA’s Technical Information Committee. The product provides course participants with an unbiased, easy-to-use selection tool that lists physical and material properties of the various insulation materials as specified in ASTM insulation specifications.
It also contains information on how to apply ASTM insulation standards to the construction of a project. The NIA Specification Guide is available in printed form or in an interactive PDF format.
In addition to the NIA books mentioned above, NIA members have access to a variety of in-person and online mechanical insulation technical resources including training programs, webinars, and industry events. In-person training, such as NIA’s Mechanical Insulation Inspector Certification Program, is designed to meet the needs of diverse internal and external audiences including Engineering – Design Firms, Facility Owners, Code & Regulatory Officials and Inspection Firms. The program is typically held offsite and includes two expert instructors, four days of learning, and a professionally printed full-color course manual with specification examples and additional printed industry resources.
The NIA Video Series
NIA’s video series is designed to help educate insulation users and industry peers, and promote products and services. The videos feature general overviews and basic how-to information for mechanical insulation installation practices. The series is based on NIA’s popular craft training video series and incorporates best practices recommended by the sponsoring insulation manufacturers. They are a useful tool for contractors, distributors, fabricators, laminators and other manufacturers to supplement existing craft training programs or to provide new hires with an introduction to mechanical insulation.
